Lou Lou Lillybottom Lyrebird the Third - WORK IN PROGRESS
This rhyming picture book for ages 4 to 8 follows Lou Lou, a superb lyrebird, through habitat, behaviour, and a complete life cycle set in Victoria's Yarra Ranges, Austraia, a temperate rainforest where mountain ash trees rise to cathedral height above a floor thick with ancient ferns. The verse is written to be a rollercoaster for the reader's mouth, rhythmic, playful, and impossible not to read aloud, and a joy to be heard.
The illustrations are hand drawn entirely in Procreate, cinematic in scale and deeply immersive in colour. A deliberate arc of natural light serves as an allegory for the lyrebird's complete lifespan, mirroring a single day from dawn to dusk across every spread where sky appears. Lou Lou's mimicry, his most magical gift, is woven visually through the book as a trail of sparkles connecting each page and drawing the reader onwards, carrying his song through the forest as you discover the life of the lyrebird, culminating in the revelation of his name, which brings the story full circle in the closing spreads.
